Brussels Energy: Everything About Gas & Electricity

Energy Brussels

Do you live in the Brussels-Capital Region or will you move there soon and are you looking for a new energy supplier? CallMePower, the energy comparison website of Belgium, gives you all the information about the energy market in Brussels and how to choose the right energy supplier.

Energy Suppliers in Brussel

Due to stricter regulations and the relatively small size of the market, significantly fewer energy suppliers are active in Brussels than in Flanders or Wallonia. While there are almost twenty suppliers active in Flanders, in the Brussels-Capital Region you currently only have a choice of four different energy suppliers, namely:

  1. ENGIE
  2. TotalEnergies
  3. Luminus
  4. Bolt

In addition to the energy suppliers mentioned above, Brusol is also active in Brussels. However, becoming a customer of Brusol is only possible if you have also purchased solar panels from this supplier. It is therefore not possible for every inhabitant of Brussels to conclude a contract with this supplier, which means that there are only four energy suppliers active in Brussels.

How Does the Energy Market of Brussel Work?

The energy market in Brussels works differently from the Flemish or Walloon energy market. Among other things, the regulations and players in the energy market differ. In this section you will find all information about energy in Brussels.

Legislation Energy Market Brussel

Several Belgian energy suppliers have opted not to supply Brussels private individuals. This is partly due to the many 'strict' rules for consumer protection.

For example, it is more difficult for a supplier to interrupt the energy supply of a defaulter, despite the fact that there are more defaulters in Brussels than in Wallonia or Flanders. In addition, in some cases the energy supplier must pay for the costs incurred by defaulters.

The main two characteristics of the Brussels energy market are:

  1. The supplier is obliged to offer a three-year contract. The customer can cancel the contract at any time (with one month's notice).
  2. There is extreme protection for defaulters, termination of a contract can take more than a year. During this period, the supplier continues to pay for distribution costs and taxes.

Regulator of the Energy market in Brussel

In the Brussels-Capital Region, BRUGEL (Brussels Gas & Electricity) is the regulator of the energy market. At national level, the CREG supervises the energy market.

BRUGEL has a number of important tasks in the Brussels energy market, including:

  • Granting licences to electricity and gas suppliers active in the Brussels-Capital Region;
  • Supervise the distribution network operator for electricity and gas;
  • Checking the transporter of electricity and gas ( Fluxys and Elia );
  • Ensuring compliance with regional national legislation and public service obligations;
  • Approve the distribution network tariffs.
  • In short, the regulator ensures that the entire organisation around the energy supply runs smoothly. They are often the authority that makes the final decision about changes, problems and certificates.

Distributor of Energy in Brussel

In the Brussels-Capital Region, there is only one distribution system operator for both electricity and natural gas, Sibelga, designated by the regional government. Sibelga is active in the 19 Brussels municipalities, with about a thousand employees.

The distribution network operator is responsible for managing the network. This means that, among other things, they maintain the network, they are responsible for keeping track of meter readings and processing consumption data.

Sibelga does not produce any energy, but it does ensure that electricity reaches your home from the distribution network and that your meter works. In addition, you pass on the meter readings to Sibelga, they handle this with the energy supplier. In the event of a power failure or gas smell, they are also involved in solving the problem.
