A speedtest allows you to measure your current internet speed on the device you run the speedtest on. The CallMePower speedtest tells you what the average and maximum download and upload speed are at the moment of doing the speedtest, as well as what the latency and the jitter are.
Tips for Doing a Speedtest
You will get the best results from the speedtest when you:
- connect your computer directly to the modem / router using an internet cable;
- do not use old devices, since these tend to be slower than new devices with the newest technology;
- do not use company computers, since these tend to use the company network first, because of which you lose speed from your own network;
- do not download or upload anything while doing the speedtest, since this will use internet;
- run a virus scan before you do the speedtest, since viruses and spyware can lower the internet speed on your device;
- close as many programs, applications and tabs to lower the internet usages at the moment of running the speedtest as much as possible.
Run the speedtest multiple times a week, at different moments during the day, on different devices, and through different web browsers to get the most reliable result.
Tips for Doing a Speedtest With Wi-Fi
When running a speedtest using a Wi-Fi connection, the results will be lower than on a device that is directly connected to the modem with a cable, since the distance between the device and the modem influences the internet speed. CallMePower, therefore, recommends you to run the speedtest using a cable connection.
If you, either way, want to run a speedtest with a Wi-Fi connection, we recommend you to place the device you run the speedtest on as close to the modem as possible.
What Is a Good Speedtest?
The CallMePower speedtest shows what the average and highest download and upload speed are, as well as what the latency and the jitter of the internet connection are.
- The download speed shows with which speed you can receive data, e.g., how long it will take for a page to load or an application or movie to download. The download speed is given in Megabits per second (Mbps or Mb/s), and is better with higher results.
- The upload speed shows with which speed you can upload data, e.g. how long it will take to upload documents to the Cloud or a picture on Social Media. The upload speed is given in Megabits per second (Mbps or Mb/s), and is better with higher results.
- The latency - also called ping - shows how much time the server needs to receive data. The latency is given in milliseconds (ms), and is better with lower results.
- The jitter is part of the latency and shows the reliability of your network. The jitter is given in milliseconds (ms), and is better with lower results.

What Internet Speed Do I Need?
What internet speed you need, depends on four factors:
- What internet connections are available on your address: VDSL and fiber, or just VDSL?
- What is the maximum internet speed of your broadband subscription? This differs per provider and broadband subscription. Your current internet speed can never be higher than the contracted internet speed.
- What is the maximum reachable internet speed on your address? This differs per provider and address.
- How much is being done at the same time on internet? Do not forget to include devices such as a printer or smart devices.
Calculate What Internet Speed You Need
We recommend a broadband subscription with a download speed of at least
0 Mbps

Internet Speed | What Can You Do On Internet? |
---|---|
Until 100 Mbps | It is possible to download or stream content on multiple devices at the same time. 100 Mbps is sufficient for households without an intensive usage. |
Until 400 Mbps | It is possible to download and stream content and game online without interruptions on multiple devices at the same time. |
Until 1 Gbps | it is possible to download and upload multiple, large documents, stream and game online in high quality and without interruptions on multiple devices at the same time. |
What Internet Speed Do I Need For Remote Working?
When working remote, it is important to have a good internet connection, so you can work and have meetings without interruptions. If you are the only one working from home, an internet speed of 100 Mbps is often sufficient. However, if your work requires a lot from internet, or if multiple people are using internet at the same time, a higher internet speed is recommended.
Tips To Increase Your Internet Speed
Do you experience slow internet at home and the speedtest confirms a low internet speed? There are several procedures you can do yourself to improve your internet speed.
- Use a different web browser.
- Connect your devices with an internet cable directly to the modem.
- Refrain from downloading / uploading too much at the same moment.
- Make sure that all your electronic devices - including the modem - are fully updated.
- Make sure that the modem is placed on a central and open place in your house, as high as possible and without electricity cables or other disruptors - such as Bluetooth devices, heating or an aquarium - nearby.
- Re-start your electronic devices and modem.
- Change the Wi-Fi channel on your modem to a less busy channel, and / or change the frequency band from the 2.4 Ghz one to the 5 Ghz one.
- Verify whether you have used all the data in your broadband subscription.
- Check whether there are network issues with your provider or works in your street.
- Check your internet cable for damages, and, if necessary, replace it.
- Buy or rent a new modem.
- Buy or rent Wi-Fi boosters to improve the internet speed in certain rooms.
- Replace old devices.
If none of these procedures help to improve your internet connection, you might consider comparing providers and switching to a different broadband subscription. When switching of broadband provider, you are able to use Easy Switch, a procedure with which you give your new provider permission to cancel your current broadband subscription.
