The Belgian telecom market has over 20 providers. The largest networks are Proximus, Telenet, Orange and VOO. Independent providers include edpnet, Scarlet, BASE, Mobile Vikings and hey telecom.
The three most common internet technologies in Belgium:
- Fibre (FTTH) — a light signal through a glass-fibre cable, up to 10 Gbps
- Cable (Telenet, VOO) — the same coaxial cable as TV, up to 1 Gbps
- VDSL — Proximus' existing copper line, usually 50 to 100 Mbps
The available technology depends on your address — always check via a coverage tool.
Since 2017, Easy Switch handles the changeover for you. Your new provider contacts your old provider and takes care of the cancellation — no service interruption, no risk of double bills. You also keep your mobile number thanks to free number portability.
Easy Switch is a Belgian government initiative that simplifies switching between internet, TV and fixed-line providers. Give your new provider your Easy Switch ID (on your invoice or in your customer area) and they handle the procedure within one working day.
According to BIPT (the Belgian Institute for Postal Services and Telecommunications), the average monthly cost is around €50 for internet, €15 to €35 for mobile, and €60 to €100 for an internet + TV + mobile bundle. Comparing saves on average €200 to €400 per year.
