How to Get a Reliable Test Result
Not every speedtest produces the same number. For a result that truly reflects your connection's performance, prepare like this:
Before You Start
- Connect your device directly to the modem with an Ethernet cable
- Avoid old devices — they're inherently slower
- Don't use a work computer with VPN or corporate proxy
- Stop all downloads, uploads, cloud sync and updates
- Run a virus scan beforehand — malware slows your device and connection
- Close as many apps and browser tabs as possible
Test Multiple Times
Run the speedtest at different moments and on different devices. A single measurement can mislead because of temporary factors — several measurements together show the real trend.
Doing a Speedtest Over Wi-Fi?
A Wi-Fi speedtest always shows lower numbers than Ethernet — sometimes up to 30% lower. The distance to the modem, the Wi-Fi type (2.4 vs 5 GHz), walls and interference all affect your signal.
If you still want a Wi-Fi test, sit as close to the modem as possible and prefer the 5 GHz band. For a fair comparison: measure over Ethernet first, then over Wi-Fi from the same spot.
What Is a Good Speedtest?

The Four Metrics Explained
Download Speed
Speed at which you receive data. Expressed in Mbps. Affects page loading, streaming and downloads. Higher is better.
Upload Speed
Speed at which you send data. Expressed in Mbps. Affects cloud sync, video calls and file sharing. Higher is better.
Ping (Latency)
Time for a server response, in ms. Lower is better. Crucial for gaming and video calls.
Jitter
Variation in ping over time, in ms. Lower is better — indicates a stable connection without spikes.
What Internet Speed Do You Need?
It depends on four factors: the connection type at your address (VDSL/coax/fibre), your plan, the number of devices and what they're doing at once. Here's a rule of thumb per household profile:

Speedtest on Cable vs Fibre
One of the biggest factors in your speedtest result is the type of connection at your address. In Belgium there's VDSL/coax (classic) and fibre (glass).
VDSL / Coax
- Runs over copper (old phone line) or coax cable
- Max. 400 Mbps download in Belgium
- Max. 100 Mbps upload
- Speed drops sharply with distance to the exchange
Fibre (FTTH)
- Runs over light pulses — almost no loss with distance
- Max. 1 Gbps download in Belgium (often more)
- Up to 200 Mbps upload
- Lower ping — ideal for gaming and video calls

Use Ethernet
A wired connection always beats Wi-Fi on Mbps — the first reflex for any speedtest.
Close Background Apps
Pause cloud-sync, downloads and streams running in the background that eat bandwidth.
Place Modem Centrally
Open, high up and away from metal. Avoid the basement, closed cupboards or near the microwave.
Restart Modem & Devices
Classic but effective: unplug, wait 30 s and plug back in.
Update Firmware
A modem with outdated firmware sometimes throttles without warning — log in and enable auto-updates.
Switch to 5 GHz
The 5 GHz band is faster and less crowded than 2.4 GHz. Picking a less busy Wi-Fi channel helps too.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Speedtest
A speedtest sends data packets between your device and a test server (Cloudflare in our case). For download/upload, we measure how much data can travel within a given timeframe — divided by the time, that gives Mbps. For ping, we measure the round-trip time of a small packet, repeated to get a reliable average.
Depends on your plan and usage. 100 Mbps is enough for a few devices streaming and browsing. For a family with multiple streams, gaming and remote work, 400 Mbps is recommended. For heavy use (4K streaming, large uploads), 1 Gbps is the sweet spot.
A good result lands close to the speed in your plan. If you have a 200 Mbps plan and measure 180 Mbps, that's fine. If you consistently get less than 70 % of the promised speed, something's wrong — call your operator or try our switching guide.
