Which Student-Housing Profile Fits You?

The "best" broadband for students depends on how long you rent and how many of you share the connection. Three typical situations :

Short stay (Erasmus, internship, 1 semester)

4G / 5G plug-and-play

Pick : Tadaam, Mixtus 4G

No technician, no connection fee, cancel monthly. Just take the router with you when you move out.

Whole academic year in one room

DSL or HFC, short-term commitment

Pick : Proximus Internet Light, edpnet VDSL, hey telecom

Stable connection for remote classes, streaming and gaming. No 24-month lock-in if you move to a new address next September.

Shared house with several students

Fibre or HFC, unlimited data

Pick : DIGI Fibre, FASTfiber, Mobile Vikings, yoin

For 3-5 housemates streaming, gaming and joining video calls at the same time. 200 Mbps+ on truly unlimited data prevents arguments at dinner.

Plug-and-Play : 4G and Satellite for Student Rooms

If you can't have a technician on site — the landlord refuses, you're only there for a few months, or there is no DSL or fibre at the address — these wireless options need no cable, no installation and are typically cancellable monthly :

Six Ways to Cut Your Student-Room Internet Bill

Picking the right plan is half the work. These often-overlooked tricks can knock another few euros off your monthly bill :

Eduroam — free campus Wi-Fi

Almost every Belgian university and college is on Eduroam. One login works on campus, in the library and in 12,000 institutions worldwide. Great for classes and group projects.

Split the cost with your housemates

A €40 / month fibre line drops to ~€10 per person when shared with four. Agree upfront who pays the bill and who owns the Wi-Fi name and password.

Easy Switch makes short stays painless

Since 2022 you can cancel for free after six months as a customer. Start with a discounted intro tariff and switch painlessly when the semester ends.

Combine mobile and home internet

A Mobile Vikings SIM shares data through VikingDeals ; Lycamobile is the cheap route for international calls home. A solid mobile plan can sometimes replace home internet altogether for light users.

No landlord permission needed for 4G

Tadaam and Mixtus ship a 4G router that needs nothing more than a power socket — no drilling, no kabel, no landlord paperwork. Ideal when your lease forbids physical installations.

Cashbacks and seasonal promos

Many providers run student-targeted offers from August through October (free activation, first month free, …). Don't wait until classes start to compare ; the best deals close fast.

Frequently Asked Questions about Student Broadband

It depends on how long you rent and what your landlord allows. For short stays (Erasmus, internships) a 4G router (Tadaam, Mixtus) is ideal — plug-and-play, cancel monthly, take it with you. For a full academic year, a DSL or HFC plan with a discounted intro tariff is the most stable choice. For a shared house, fibre or HFC with unlimited data avoids piek-uur slowdowns.

For a new physical connection (DSL, fibre, cable) that requires drilling or cable-pulling : yes, you need written permission from the landlord. For a 4G router or an existing connection (plug the modem into the wall jack) : no permission required. Tip : before you sign the lease, check whether an active line is already present — you can take it over via Easy Switch instead of starting from scratch.

Yes — since the Easy Switch procedure and the abolition of the early-termination fee after six months of service, short-term broadband is perfectly doable. For really short stays (1-3 months), a 4G router with a monthly contract is the simplest path. For 6-12 months, take a regular broadband plan and cancel on your way out — just avoid cancelling under six months, when early-termination fees can still apply.

For one student on the basics (email, Word, Netflix, Zoom classes) 30-50 Mbps is enough. For two people or one streamer : 100 Mbps. A shared house with 3-5 students streaming, gaming and working from home in parallel : aim for 200-500 Mbps on unlimited data. Wi-Fi reach in older student houses is often the real bottleneck — a €25-40 mesh extender usually solves that.

If you go back home during summer and Christmas, the family Wi-Fi usually has you covered already. For short trips elsewhere (relatives, a friend's place, holiday rental), a mobile hotspot or a Tadaam day-pass router is generally cheaper than a second contract.

Three options : (1) one plan, shared Wi-Fi — cheapest, one person on the bill ; (2) one 4G router per room — pricier but fully independent ; (3) one main line + mesh Wi-Fi routers per room — best for larger houses with 5+ students. Whatever you pick, put the cost-split, password ownership and what-if-someone-leaves rules in writing.

Availability and final tariff may differ per address and per student city — ask your landlord which network (DSL, cable, fibre) is already present at the property before comparing.
